H2E Employee Highlight Nick Gellerman

Nick Gellerman, a Senior Power Engineer at H2E’s Helena, Montana Office, has been with H2E for nearly four years. Hailing from Bismarck, North Dakota, Nick holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Computer Science and a Minor in Mathematics from the University of North Dakota. With a depth of experience in consulting, power generation, transmission and distribution as well as on-site commissioning, Nick is a unique talent that brings reliable input and guidance to any project.

Nick got his start as a power engineer during his childhood by taking apart the 120-volt wall outlets in his parents’ home and testing where in the internal design of the outlet he could find a charge. These tests produced a few powerful shocks as well as Nick’s lifelong criticality of the U.S. electrical plug and socket design. The curiosity that pushed him to dismantle electrical components also led him to program his own video games and become a national medalist in the Science Olympiad. These interests signaled Nick’s capacity for the breadth of work he tackles in multiple industries today!

Once he obtained his degree, Nick worked as an engineer with a power cooperative in North Dakota, specializing in coal, wind and hydro power generation. As his skills grew, Nick knew that a change of landscape and work challenges would be best to continue his trajectory. This move led him to H2E’s office in Helena where he observed, “Now I get to spend a lot of time seeing what I am creating, before the only feedback was red-lined drawings, now I am on-site commissioning, discussing and inspecting with Client’s and toggling the switches” Nick managed to conquer the learning curve quickly and rise to a Senior Engineer level, he credits this to multiple aspects at H2E, “The environment is very inclusive and the highly knowledgeable, management provide good service and training with thoughtful answers and technical expertise while being fun to work with.” Although Nick may give credit to guidance from his team leaders and Principal Engineers, he is now one of the professionals that young engineers turn to with their questions. According to Nick, a philosophy he holds towards his work is, “Always back up your work with primary references, being able to explain everything that you are doing, while you are doing it is important. If it is in the code book, it must have originated from a reasoning and a source.” A sentiment that is evident in the way Nick meticulously approaches every project’s challenges.

Outside of work Nick is learning new songs on his guitar and piano, his rendition of Sultan of Swing is coming along well. Nick is still enjoying the diversity of elevation that he lacked in North Dakota, by summitting different hikes around Helena. After being rebuffed by snow and thunderstorms on previous ascensions, he thinks that this year entails a guaranteed summit of Mt. Elkhorn with his Fiancé!

We are very fortunate at H2E to have Nick as part of our team!
